Intricate Web

This double album is centred around British composer Liz Dilnot Johnson's complete string quartets, performed by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet with singer Loré Lixenberg and clarinetist Ronald Woodley.

The programme features the award-winning Sky-burial, a setting of words by Kathleen Jamie, along with a sequence of original pieces, setting Jo Shapcott's quirky poetry, for female voice.

Sea-change is a clarinet quintet for five different clarinets for the soloist and five instruments each for the string quartet, including Swanee whistles, while Fantasia: Forty-something is dedicated to the Fitzwilliam String Quartet to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Liz Dilnot Johnson chats with American journalist Daniel Kepl about the Intricate Web album and the inspirations for Scintilla (2 October 2019)
